Casanera - A long-standing family tradition, Made in the Maquis

Casanera

A long-standing family tradition, Made in the Maquis.

Marie Ceccaldi and Maria Battaglia
are the two sisters who founded the Casanera brand…

Two product worlds in perfect harmony: a line of ORGANIC cosmetics born from the plants of their native Balagne, and exclusive jewelry collections celebrating the beauty of women.

The Casanera philosophy draws its inspiration from family heritage. From an early age, Marie and Maria grew up surrounded by myrtle, immortelle, and juniper: plants of the Corsican maquis that today hold no secrets for them.

Marie : « We inherited a precious herbarium compiled over three generations by a healer great-grandmother and a mother who was a pioneer of fresh cosmetics in the 1970s. »

Alongside their mother, an herbalist who opened her first boutique in Calvi, Marie learned how to make the best use of plants, gather their essences, and pass on their benefits.
Marie : « As a child, I used to gather herbs and roots for the decoctions and macerations prepared by my grandmother, who treated everything with Corsican plants—from kidney stones to burns—and chose harvesting days according to the lunar cycle ».

A few years later, when they created a beautiful spa in their Relais & Château, La Signoria in Calvi, they were quickly approached by major brands wishing to distribute their cosmetic lines there.
Marie : « But we preferred to create a few products made from Corsican plants. Thanks to the success with our clients, and with the support of a specialized laboratory on the mainland, we decided to develop our own products by creating an entire line of organic skincare, which we began selling in our first CASANERA boutique in Calvi in 2010 ».

Marie and Maria : « The CASANERA concept is inspired by the atmosphere of our mother’s herbalist shop created in 1974. It was very dark in order to preserve the properties of the plants. Herbalist storefronts were generally black, the Corsican flag is black and white, and black is culturally significant on our island. We love this absolute color, and the CASANERA brand is also the result of all these influences. »

Drawing from the richness of the island’s flora, they make it a point of honor to collaborate only with local producers. The plants are hand-picked and traditionally distilled in Lumio to create the purest and rarest essential oils. Through their meeting with perfumer Patrick Paquet and their shared passion, Marie and Maria developed skincare lines, eaux de parfum, home fragrances, candles hand-poured from 100% vegetable wax, and diffusers inspired by the scents of the four corners of Corsica.

But Casanera does not stop at cosmetology.
Maria : « When we opened the first boutique in Calvi, we introduced jewelry alongside skincare and perfumes. We began by distributing brands we loved. »
It is Maria, responsible for the collections presented, who for more than ten years has enjoyed growing success by constantly combining exclusivity, beauty, and quality.

Maria : « We collaborate with various designers and also create our own collections. In 2022 we decided to take a new step by launching a line of fine jewelry in recycled gold and diamonds, designed and drawn by me.
These pieces feature symbolic representations of the richness of the island’s flora, fauna, and culture
»
In this way, our jewelry universe blends with our perfumes and cosmetics, allowing us to continue offering our clients a unique selection focused on rarity and the beauty of Corsica.

After following different paths, Marie and Maria felt the need to reunite and work hand in hand as a family, guiding Casanera while respecting their traditions.
Maria : « There are six of us children, and we wanted to preserve this family spirit which for us is a tradition, a necessity, and proof that unity is strength ».
« In 2012 we opened the Porto Vecchio boutique, in 2013 the Ajaccio boutique, and in the meantime an exclusive corner at the « Bon Marché » in Paris, a franchise in Aix en Provence, and an online store ».

With this continued growth, the founders now wish to go even further. Their project is to create their own cosmetics laboratory, a soap-making workshop, and a jewelry workshop, all gathered in one single place in Lumio, their native village, making Casanera a brand that is 100% « Made in Maquis ».

Like any company closely tied to nature, their production depends on an environment that can be more or less generous and on a climate that has become increasingly uncertain year after year. They accept this reality and its natural rules.
This environmental awareness has shaped all of their CSR commitments, from product design and manufacturing methods to packaging quality, transportation distances, production volumes, and partnerships with various associations that allow them to contribute to a universal cause: our planet.

Marie : « Because of the rarity of the raw materials we use, production is necessarily limited. This limitation suits us perfectly—after all, isn’t exclusivity the very essence of luxury? »

These two passionate sisters, heirs to a lineage of strong Corsican women, share their love for their land. This family connection to nature is their DNA. A lineage of women that is far from ending.
Marie and Maria : « Our younger sister will soon join us for our new laboratory.
We are proud to showcase Corsica through the excellence of our products
».
